Still mourning the loss of Cindy Savalas, Kai Hugo AKA Palmbomen II returns to Tim Sweeney’s Beats in Space imprint with Memories of Cindy Pt. 2. Like its predecessor it arrives exclusively on vinyl and following his debut back in 2015, cements Palmbomen’s place as a mainstay of the BiS family.
The second of four 12″s, the ongoing series has an overarching aesthetic and narrative. Continuing with the twisted promo videos we tune back into ‘Real Talk’ and the Californian themes are present once again. With its monosyllabic host resembling a cult leader, the imaged network television show broadcasted from Carmel Vista, San Diego, leads us through a world of bizarre infomercials and low budget music videos – you can almost imagine watching it from some seedy motel room in the backwoods of The Golden State.
In case you were wondering, Cindy is totally fictitious, but that doesn’t stop Palmbomen from channelling a sense melancholy into these releases. Writing one specific track “for all the suffering in this world,” Pt. 2 sees the analogue enthusiast balance his off-kilter EBM and acid-tinged productions with a pair of introspective cuts better suited to home listening. Combined with the demented suburban feel of the visuals, there is a bit of an Angelo Badalamenti/Twin Peaks quality to the overall package.
