Belgian-born but based within the British Isles, Cabasa has been shaped by formative years spent overhearing the early strains of electronic favoured by his dad – a one-time fixture of Belgium’s new beat scene – and the so-called ‘post-dubstep diaspora’ that was so ubiquitous at the turn of the decade. The resultant cross-pollination of styles feels like a melting pot of influential UK labels old and new: Warp, On-U Sound, Good Looking Records, Hessle Audio or Livity Sound, the impression British music had made on this fledgling producer is undeniable.
Following up efforts on Eclipse Tribez and No Suit Records and typified by A2’s ‘Who The Fuck Is Jay C’, he continues to defy genre with a debut for nascent label Eddy Larkin. Swaggering under sheer bass weight, the skeletal rhythm underpins the icy melodies – all pentatonic synth motifs and dub electronics, they recall the forward-thinking constructs usually attributed to labels like Different Circles, but the track as a whole has more in common with earlier hybrid sounds popularised by Untold’s Hemlock imprint.
The Mail Sent EP is out September 7th on Eddy Larkin – pre-order direct from the label.
