The past three years have witnessed an influx of Danish electronic music with tranquil sense of melody and a focus on texture. Maybe it’s a reflection of the country’s outstanding natural beauty; the dense forests, sweeping landscapes and pristine stoney beaches; maybe it’s just coincidence.
One of the emergent forces pushing this kind of sound is Copenhagen’s ØEN REC., a label committed to supporting local talent. Close ties to the Danish Regelbau collective making so many waves aside, this is an enterprise busy forging its own identity – just take the impending release, where the their extended family continues to expand with a limited-run cassette.
A carefully-curated compilation spanning house, downtempo and ambient, all 14 tracks featured on Islands in the Stream have been sourced from the Danish underground. In the case of the opening cut from Copenhagen’s Fruit, however, maybe we should say ‘handpicked’. ‘Words’ presents itself as an intricately woven tapestry, a trellis of dense ambient swells, chirruping rainforest FX and humid atmospheres ushered along by the ethereal choral vocals which set the tone.
Islands in the Stream is out July 27th on ØEN REC – pre-order direct from the label.
