A one-time purveyor of harder-edged sounds, Jason Adkins is fondly remembered for that sort armchair, after-hours techno synonymous with the Artificial Intelligence era of the early-to-mid-90s. Much of it was released on the now defunct Metatone label he co-ran, emerging under names like Electro Music Union, Sinoesin and Xonox. It’s so-called ‘intelligent’ techno, both beautifully crafted and increasingly sought-after over time.
With original pressings described in the press notes as a “techno crate digger’s daydream,” the back catalogue has been subject to a large-scale excavation courtesy of AVA. Records and Cold Blow. Electro Music Union, Sinoesin & Xonox Works 1993 – 1994 is out now and to mark the occasion, we asked AVA. co-founder Damiano von Erckert if he could pick 5 essential tracks from around that same period.
1. The Irresistible Force – Space Is The Place (Intergalactic Ambient Mix)
This record was originally released in 1991 via London based Rising High Records which contains 2 mixes of the same track. The A-side is a more uplifting version.
2. Linari Mariot – Linari To The Moon
Linari Mariot released this record in 1994 through Radioactive Lamb, a label that released quite a few interesting records. I dig the city night car racing vibe here. Huge bassline.
3. Paul W. Teebrooke – Blue Light
Paul W. Teebrooke is better known as Stasis but all-in-all a great producer responsible for a lot of good records in the spheres of ambient, experimental, techno and electro. This track was released in 1996 via Kirk Degiorgio’s label, Op-ART.
4. Move D – In/Out (Initial Mix)
David Moufang, AKA Move D, became a very dear friend of mine over the past years. Not only is he a great DJ with an on-point feeling for crowds, but to me, he’s first and foremost a great musician and what I’d consider an authentic artist who loves everything about making music with technology from past and recent years. Kunststoff (released on his own Source Records imprint in 1994), his incredible first solo LP, is an outstanding piece of music. We reissued this album in 2018 via AVA. Records which I’m running with my dear companion Juri, AKA Jürgen Ratan. You can pick literally every song and it’s beautiful. Our reissue comes with bonus takes which were previously unreleased for over 25 years.
5. Johnny Lamas – Sahara
This is just a recent find and part of Johnny Lamas’ self-released album Danza Cosmica in 1993. It has a boogie vibe to it and perfect for any balcony vacation.
