Asahi Yamamoto; AKA the ‘Brown Mushroom Hair on Acid’; AKA the nomadic spirit behind the cult Beanie’s mix and party series; has been evoking the soundsystem under his E.L.M.S moniker. Moving on from a period when he could regularly be found reaching for dancefloor oddities, worldly curiosities and disco (not to say he won’t return to those sounds), recent mixes are tailor made for brukking out alongside sewer-dwelling mutants as an extraterrestrial entity toasts the dance.
Counting the likes of Rings Around Saturn, Bradley Zero, Ramzi, Mori Ra, Yoshinori Hayashi and Telephones among the names to get involved, Beanie’s has enjoyed something of a cult status. It’s what put the Tokyo native on our radar, and we couldn’t resist asking him to contribute a mix. Recording an hour-long blend, abstract forms and dub FX corrupt the early exchanges. Eventually making way for the inevitable assault of frenzied jungle breaks and unabashed dancehall vitality, we inch towards more traditional dancehall sounds as the mix unfurls, Yamamoto pulling out the sensitive jams for a loved-up finale.
