New steam from Russia; dubby, sub-zero electronics whir, rising and falling like cold industrial wind. Over this, churning pressure leans forward, bracing for the incline; gentle, urgent, piston chatter interlaced with the blink and drip of Derbyshire electronics. The machine winds down leaving the mist to drift.
OL is part of the fleet of Russian interest which seems to have grown separate but strong on our periphery. Let’s think of Private Persons, Pavel Milyakov (his Rassvet imprint and community ‘Johns Kingdom’); then there are the 12th Isle favourites XYR, Dices + Flaty (AEM Rhythm Cascade), Gost Zvuk, and Udacha. OL’s previous output on Fit Sound and Meda Fury might recognise him, but his recent offer on Gost Zvuk is something which stands tall. Here we watch as he stretches and squeezes waves over gentle ebbing rhythms, kaleidoscope textures which blink and plop. He explains it as “the point where geometry and mathematical constructions meet with organic forms” – neat and apt. Out soon on Motion Ward, it’s experimental, uneasy, in parts tightly wound and others eerily calm.
Dismeteo is out February 22nd on Motion Ward – pre-order the vinyl here.
