DIY culture has been synonymous with techno ever since the genre was first conceived, but this is probably as DIY as you can get. With a rather peculiar array of objects as his tools – including several modified records and a bespoke tone arm that looks like something out of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – artist Graham Dunning has explored the “overlap between the sonic and visual” with a project entitled ‘Mechanical Techno’.
By mapping the individual elements so they’re triggered to play out his composition, Dunning has created a turntable-based, kinetic sound sculpture that plays dance music.
It sort of reminds us of this monstrous creation we stumbled upon a while back. The stuff nightmares are made of, it isn’t the easiest of watches, but we love it!
